About

This website is a history of SPU-Darwin, the program to bring LEGO into a digital existence. Darwin ran from 1995-1999, and resulted in the creation of new LEGO products, such as LEGO.com, multimedia building instructions, the Robotics Invention System for Mindstorms, computer games, research into collaborative digital play, and new science for 3D computer graphics and information technologies.

SPU-Darwin meant “Strategic Product Unit – Darwin” and LEGO organized it so we could carry out our activities in an expedited way, meaning that there were times when we could skip corporate policy in order to act more quickly. Usually we just call it “Darwin”, to honor the scientist Charles Darwin, but also because it’s faster to say.
